Sri Lanka Customs warehouse operations were disrupted to a great extent on Monday after owing to a work-to-rule campaign launched by the Customs Trade Union Alliance demanding the authorities to withdraw the proposed new Customs Ordinance Draft Bill.
Eight trade unions including the Customs Executive Officers Union, Customs Superintendents Union, All Sri Lanka Customs Services Union and Customs Inspectors Union had joined hands to implement the trade union action, a leader of All Sri Lanka Customs Services Union (ASLCSU) said.
He noted that the Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake is implementing a plan to destabilise Customs duties and trade unions have no confidence on him.
He added that they expect a firm answer from the President and Prime Minister on the proposed new laws. The work-to-rule campaign will continue till they receive an assurance from the authorities that the controversial bill would be abandoned. He noted that according to information received, the new bill will remove the power vested in the Customs under the existing ordinance. (Bandula)
