Eminent public servant Bradman Weerakoon passes away

News

Bradman Weerakoon, one of Sri Lanka’s most eminent civil servants, passed away on Monday. He was 94 years old at the time of his death.

Mr. Weerakoon, starting off life in the Government Agent’s office in 1954, later served as secretary to a record seven prime ministers – probably a world record! He was secretary to Sir John Kotelawela, S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, Wijayananda Dahanayake, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Dudley Senanayake , Ranasinghe Premadasa and Ranil Wickremesinghe. In rare interview with the Sunday Times on February 5, 2023, he said his parents named him ‘Bradman’ as he was born on October 20, 1930, the day Australian cricket legend Don Bradman arrived in Sri Lanka by ship en-route to England to play the Ashes series.

Funeral arrangements will be notified later
