The High Commission of India collaborated with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre to organize two special meditation sessions today to mark the World Meditation Day designated by the United Nations.
The first session took place at the Mayurapathy Meditation Hall in Colombo, while the second was conducted at the Jethavanarama Buddhist Monastery in Kalatuwawa, Ratnapura. These events attracted a large number of participants who appreciated the benefits gained from the meditation practices.
On December 6, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution A/79/L.27, officially declaring December 21 as World Meditation Day. The resolution included representatives from both India and Sri Lanka, emphasizing the positive impact of meditation on overall health.
This declaration highlights the complementary relationship between yoga and meditation,. December 21 also holds particular significance as it corresponds with the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the shortest day and longest night of the year. This natural event is often seen as a time for introspection and renewal, providing a fitting opportunity for individuals to meditate and reflect on their health and well-being.
