The number of inmates who have been serving death sentences stands at 1261, and among them 297 are serving their sentence at the Welikada Prison, Prisons Department sources said.
Of the said number 823 inmates have submitted appeals against their death sentence. This includes 36 females as well.
In addition 438 death sentence inmates have not appealed against the decision.
It is reported that the list of 18 inmates which were sent to the President for executions includes inmates who have not appealed against the punishment.
