The third reading of the 20th Amendment was passed in Parliament a short while ago with 156 votes in favour and 65 against.
The Government easily secured the 2/3 majority it required to pass the amendment.
A total of eight MPs from the Opposition voted for the amendment. The same eight had earlier voted to pass the second reading of the amendment.
Former President Maithripala Sirisena was the lone Government MP to be absent at the time of voting.
