A total of 24 houses had been destroyed completely due to a fire at the Hollyrood tea estate in Talawakelle last night.
A fire which had broken out at a residence had spreaded across the other string of houses, Talawakelle-Lindula Urban Council Chairman Ashoka Sepala said.
Talwakelle Police suspect that the fire had occured as a result of an electric leakage while a mobile phone had been connected to a switch.
The fire had been controlled by the Talawakelle Fire Service, Police, Army, Special Task Force, and estate workers in the area.
A total of 71 people belonging to 24 families have been displaced due to the incident. They have been temporarily located at the Talawakelle Tamil Maha Vidyalaya.
