At least 31 local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing activities in the sea area of Silawathurai yesterday were arrested by Navy, a statement said. The fishermen had engaged in illegal fishing practices using unlawful fishing gear and without valid licence.
During the arrest, 7 dinghies, 7 unauthorized fishing nets (Surukku), 3 pairs of diving fins and 12 diving masks were taken into naval custody. The apprehended persons and belongings were handed over to the Mannar Fisheries Inspector for further investigations.
