Seventy-five spill gates of dams have been opened due to torrential rains expected to recede temporarily by tomorrow (Dec 25), the Disaster Management Centre said.
These spill gates had been opened due to the rising water levels of dams in the Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Ampara, Hambantota, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, and Kilinochchi districts.
The National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC) has disbursed more than Rs 19.9 million to provide relief and compensation to residents affected by the bad weather.
More than 4000 families are currently sheltered at some 100 relief camps set-up countrywide.
The inclement weather conditions influenced by the North-East monsoon has so far affected 16 districts. However, the Meteorological Department predicts that showers will temporarily reduce tomorrow.
