An act of bravery by a young police sergeant prevented the robbery of Rs 22.3 million and led to the arrest of two suspects in the Thambuttegama area today morning, Police said.
Police Sgt Buddhika Kumara attached to the minor offence branch was on his bike passing a private bank in Thambuttegama when he noticed a commotion.
He jumped off his bike and ran to the scene when he noticed and armed man trying to get away with the money which had been brought to the bank to be deposited by the businessman.
The gunman tried to fire at the Police constable and threw chilli powder at the police Sgt, but he managed to control the gunman leading to his arrest.
Another suspect too was arrested from the scene.
A locally produce gun, one cartridge, a knife, and a mobile phone was taken into custody along with the motorcycle they had arrived.
The two suspects were aged 48 and 50 years and residence of Thambuttegama.
