Gold wires worth Rs.43 million were confiscated by Customs while attempting to smuggle into the country.
According to Customs spokesperson Sudatta Silva, the 35-year-old businessmen from Colombo has been a frequent overseas traveller and had arrived to the country from Dubai via an Emirates flight.
Gold wires, weighing two kilogrammes, were found inside his luggage, carefully wrapped and placed unsuspiciously among chocolates and other goods.
The businessman was fined Rs.1.2 million and the gold wires were confiscated, he said.
