The Cabinet of Ministers has granted policy approval to change the wording “exceeding six years” in paragraph (b) of Article 83 of the Constitution to “exceeding five years” with reference to the President’s tenure.
This follows the proposal jointly tabled by President Ranil Wickramasinghe and Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.
Accordingly, the Bill, prepared by the legal draftsman, has been granted approval by the Attorney General at the cabinet meeting held last Tuesday (July 9).
After being published in the Gazette, the proposal will be brought before Parliament.
