An “Anti-Narcotic Command” will be established to combat drug smuggling into the country by empowering the armed forces and the State Intelligence Service to collaborate with international intelligence agencies, Senior Adviser on National Security to the President and Chief of the Presidential Staff Sagala Ratnayaka said.
The process of drafting necessary legislation is currently underway to give legal effect. Mr. Ratnayaka said once drafting legislation is finalized, it will be presented to Parliament.
Mr. Ratnayaka made these comments while inspecting the recent seizure of 200 kilograms of heroin valued at Rs. 4 billion which was intercepted in the high seas and brought to the Colombo port.
Stressing that 65 percent of drug raids result in arrests, while 35 percent manage to enter the country. Mr Ratnayaka elaborated that the program was urgent and should be focused on entirely preventing the entry of drugs into the country.
