There have been about 60 shooting incidents so far this year, Police Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nihal Thalduwa told journalists.
The shootings have claimed 36 lives while 28 others have sustained injuries, according to statistics released by police. There have been about six shooting incidents where there were no deaths of injuries.
When queried whether there has been an increase in shooting incidents this year, SSP Thalduwa claimed the situation is similar to last year, though he could not give a concrete assessment without referring to data.
Some of the shootings relate to personal disputes, such as disputes over land. However, the majority of the shootings have been connected to organised criminal gang activity and have been committed using automatic weapons, according to the Police Spokesman.
