A baby elephant with gun shot injuries on its body and ‘Hakka Patas’ explosion wounds on its mouth early this morning was found in the garden by residents of Nawagattegama in the Puttalam district and taken for treatment, Wildlife officials said.
The elephant believed to be around five years of age had crept through an electric fence and entered the residential area.
The elephant was screaming in pain and the Wildlife officials were informed immediately, a resident said.
North western province Wildlife unit’s Vetinary surgeon Isuru Kottegoda said that in addition to the external injuries the animal also had internal injuries and was in a serious condition.
Wildlife official Sanjeewa Weerasekara said that it would not be able immediately to release the elephant back to the Thabbowa sanctuary from where the animal had come and would be treated and released later.
