Barbara Sansoni, a legend in Sri Lanka’s arts circle passed away early this morning. Born on April 22nd, 1928, she had just turned 94.
She founded the Barefoot store in the late 1960s selling boldly distinctive handloom fabric that embodied her love of colour, designed by her for the weaving centres for rural women run by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd order. An artist and writer, her well known works include ‘Vihares and Verandas’ and ‘Architecture of an Island’.
Among the many accolades she received in her colourful life were Sri Lanka’s Kalasuri award and the Geoffrey Bawa award for contribution to architecture.
