A severe cyclonic storm over the southeast Arabian sea will result in heavy rains, thundershowers, strong winds and very rough seas today (07), the Meteorology Department warned.
Issuing an advisory, the Department said the depression 'Biparjoy' will intensify into a severe cyclonic storm today and a very severe cyclonic storm by tomorrow(08).
Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the sea areas where the cyclone is developing and those who are already at sea are advised to return immediately.
The Department said the Southwest monsoon is also currently establishing over the island.
"Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts today. Fairly heavy showers (about 100mm) are likely at some places in Sabaragamuwa province and in Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts," the Met Department forecasted.
