A British national found carrying a revolver and 10 rounds of live ammunition was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport while trying to leave the country.
He also had a Rambo knife with him.
The British national identified as Paker Robert Michael, 54 was due to board a flight to London today afternoon when the detection was made when the baggage was scanned.
He had claimed that the revolver was an antique item.
However the detections was referred to the Government Analyst for report on the items.
Police said that the British national should have obtained Civil Aviation Authority permission to carry the weapon in the baggage.
Police were due to produce the suspect at the Negombo Magistrate courts.
