Buddhist and Pali University discussing ways of reopening

The Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka is looking for ways of restarting the University, after it was closed due to a series of ragging incidents. 

Established in 1982, the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, provides Buddhist education for both monks and laymen, not only Sri Lankan, but other Asian Buddhist countries as well. 

However, the University was rocked with repeated ragging incidents this week, including locking students in toilets, forcing students to climb up and down the stairs while carrying a load of clothes or forbidding them to look up while walking. 

Four students, including a lay student, had lodged two complaints with the Police regarding the issue, while a monk had undergone treatment at the Galle Karapitiya Hospital due to ragging. 

Yesterday (December 16) holding a press conference, Mahopadyaya (Chancellor) of the Buddhist and Pali University, Prof. Venerable Neluwe Sumanawansha Thero announced a temporary closure of the University as providing a “break” to the students from December 19 onward. 

“Even though Prof. Venerable Walpola Rahula Thero had established this University to provide education to monks within a monastery environment this decline affects the Buddha Sasana as well”, Sumanawansha Thero expressed. 

The State Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Suren Raghavan expressed his ideas on the incident as well. 

“The University which was closed temporarily should be restarted as soon as possible and the goals in the University Act pursued. It is my responsibility to do so”, Prof. Raghavan stated. 

Currently, the University is holding discussions and planning on the way of restarting the University.
