In response to concerns about the safety standards of the boundary wall at the Galle Road end of the Ratmalana Airport, the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) confirmed that it meets "obstacle limitation surface standards."
Taking into account the concerns raised by the flying community at Ratmalana Airport, the CAASL states that there is no objection to removing the wall, provided that state security authorities conduct a thorough security threat assessment.
Additionally, the CAASL states that if the wall is removed, establishing a perimeter fence made of frangible (breakable upon impact) material that adheres to prescribed safety standards is mandatory.
The CAASL emphasized that public safety on Galle Road must be prioritized, as an aircraft overrun or undershoot could pose significant risks to road users and residents.
The Minister of Civil Aviation has been informed following a site visit and technical study by an expert committee.
