The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) will take action against those who had cut down trees and cleared land inside the Rumassala Sanctuary, the CEA's Galle District Assistant Director W.A. Premaratne said.
He made the statement to journalists after conducting an inspection of the area where a controversy has arisen over claims that certain elements were constructing a 40 foot road through the Rumassala Sanctuary. The road is allegedly being constructed as an access road to a hotel currently being constructed in Unawatuna.
Journalists and CEA officials who visited the area yesterday witnessed that trees had been cut down and land cleared inside the buffer zone of the Rumassala Sanctuary. Accordingly, the CEA Assistant Director said they will initiate legal action against those who cleared land coming under the sanctuary.
