Cyclone ‘Ditwah’, one of the most severe natural disasters in nearly two decades, shattered Sri Lanka, causing widespread destruction through flash floods and landslides in multiple regions, with families affected in all 25 districts. China Harbour Engineering Company South Asia & Southeast Asia Regional Office in Sri Lanka (CHEC Regional Office) were among the first responders to this unprecedented emergency in terms of deploying rescue teams and donating essential supplies. With over two decades of playing a key role in contributing to Sri Lanka Lanka’s infrastructure development and currently holding Chairmanship of The Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Sri Lanka (CCCSL), CHEC Regional Office stands strong with Sri Lanka in the face of this sudden and severe disaster, helping the country to recover, the company said in a media release.
On November 30, CHEC Regional Office promptly launched a rescue mission in Kuruniyawatta to rescue people trapped in the floods.
On December 1 responding to the call from the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, CHEC Regional Office coordinated a donation campaign amongst Chinese companies in Sri Lanka. As of December 05, CCCSL has so far collected a total of Rs. 19.5 million of financial support from Chinese companies.
Employees of the CHEC Regional Office contributed Rs. 3 million providing timely support for the Government’s relief efforts.
On December 3, CHEC Regional Office, with the support of the Sri Lanka Army, donated emergency relief supplies worth nearly Rs. 1 million to local communities in three disaster zones in the North Western province. Hundreds of packages were distributed providing much-required essential food items to affected communities.
Also on the same day, an emergency response unit was deployed equipped with 24 land clearing machinery, along-with 36 employees, led by Xu Liqiang, Deputy General Manager of CHEC Regional Office, in order to clear the destruction caused by the severe landslides.
