The Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) human trafficking, smuggling and maritime crime investigation division is conducting a probe into the alleged smuggling of children from Sri Lanka to Malaysia.
The investigation was initiated in response to a police complaint.
It was disclosed that children under 18, mainly Tamil nationals from Northern and Eastern regions, are being sent to Malaysia.
Children use legitimate Malaysian passports for travel, but reportedly obtain fake ones upon arrival, which are then sent to France and the UK.
About 13 children have reportedly been taken to Malaysia so far, according to the Police, and an intermediary smuggler is involved in the operation.
Police further said that investigations are in progress to capture the suspects.
