The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is to arrest former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon and seven other officers of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) over a shooting incident in Matara in 2023.
Police spokesman SSP Buddhika Manatunga said that the Matara Magistrate court today ordered the arrest of the former IGP and seven other officers and accordingly the CID will implement the order.
On December 31, 2013, a team from the CCD was sent to arrest a suspect from a hotel in Pelena in Weligama, Matara, but the local police had not been informed about the operation.
A local police team which had arrived at the scene had opened fire and a Police Sergeant was killed in the incident.
The court ordered the arrest of the then IGP and seven others as the deployment of the CCD team was done illegally.
