Cabinet has approved a proposal by Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekara to ban all face coverings that conceal the identity of a person.
The minister via a post on his Facebook page announced that Cabinet had approved his proposal.
The proposed banned face coverings include the Burqa, which conceals the entire face and the Niqab, which only reveal the eyes.
The legislation concerning the ban on full face coverings will now be placed before Parliament for approval and gazetted into law if it is approved by a majority of MPs.
