The Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal to amend the Kandyan Marriage and Divorce Act and the final decision for the amendments to the Muslim Marriage Law will be presented within the next few weeks, Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said.
According to Kandyan Law, a woman must obtain her parents' permission before marrying, which is contrary to the country's general basic legal system, according to the Minister.
"As a result, this amendment is enforced to remove that requirement, to remove the weaknesses in registration, and to set up the procedure properly," he said.
The Minister also commented on the proposed changes to the Muslim Marriage Law. The amendments to the specific law have been discussed for a long time, and the final decision will be made in a few weeks, he said.
He stated that the issue of allowing polygamy under the Muslim Marriage Act has gotten attention, and there are currently two recommendations.
"It has been expressed as one opinion to approve polygamy for limited people who are not economically disadvantaged, but no final conclusion has yet been given. It has also been recommended that the Quazi Court systems in divorce under Muslim Law be abolished," the Minister concluded.
