Cabinet approves procurement of five power sets for Railway

The cabinet has given the go ahead for the procurement of five power sets for the Sri Lanka Railway, Cabinet spokesman, Dr Nalinda Jayathissa told the cabinet media conference today. 

He explained that the Sri Lanka Railway Department currently does not have a sufficient number of power sets to operate passenger trains in suburban areas.
 
According to him a minimum of 96 power sets are required to maintain the railway service currently in operation, and there is a shortage of a few power sets.

The Spokesman also explained that most of the power sets currently in operation have been in service for over 20 years, therefore most of the power sets continually susceptible to sudden interruptions and breakdowns. 
As a consequence, it has been observed that the passengers who use trains for their daily travel are encountering many inconveniences.
Considering the prevailing situation the cabinet has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Bimal Ratnayake for the procurement of five power sets to engage in services for suburban and long-distance travel.

    What is the use, everyday there is an issue with the trains. If the engines are there, the workers are on strike.
