Chairman of the expert committee on public service salary disparities, Udaya Seneviratna, announced that the Cabinet has approved a basic salary increase for all public servants starting January 2025.
According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), the salary increase will range from 24% for lower grades to over 50% for higher positions, depending on qualifications, experience, and current roles.
In response to current inflation and economic conditions, Mr Seneviratna also revealed that the Cabinet has approved an increase in the cost of living allowance to Rs. 25,000 for all public servants, effective January 2025.
Last week, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposed salary revisions across all public service sectors.
An expert committee, led by former Presidential Secretary Udaya Seneviratne, was previously appointed to prepare a report with recommendations for these salary adjustments in the 2025 budget. The committee consulted major professional associations and the broader public sector, analyzed relevant data, and finalized its report.
Based on these recommendations, the Cabinet approved the President’s proposal to include the salary revisions in the 2025 Budget.
