Cabinet has given approval to appoint a committee to study and report on over-accessorising of public transport buses which are jeopardising the safety of passengers.
The proposal to Cabinet was presented by Minister of Transport, Highways, Port, and Civil Aviation Bimal Ratnayake.
The committee will consist representatives of all relevant institutions, including the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Port, and Civil Aviation and make recommendations to Cabinet.
Changing the design and modification of buses have to be done with the prior approval of the Commissioner General of Motor Traffic in keeping with provisions of the Motor Traffic Act.
However these rules have been ignored and modifications made to buses in a way that endangers the safety and of passengers, Cabinet was informed.
