Caution Advised: Risks of Viewing Flooded Areas

In light of recent flooding, authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution when attempting to view affected areas. Tragically, a young man of 22 lost his life due to electrocution while exploring a flooded zone.

This incident underscores the severe risks associated with floodwaters, which can hide numerous dangers, including electrical hazards. Residents are advised to stay clear of these areas and adhere to safety warnings to prevent further tragedies.

The incident took place in Bulathsinhala area on Monday evening when a boat carrying 20 individuals, exploring the flooded area, came into contact with a high-voltage power line.

According to the police, the incident resulted in the death of a young man operating the boat, who was holding the rudder handle and fell into the floodwaters after contacting the overhead power line. The others onboard suffered electric shocks but fortunately escaped without serious harm.

Acting Director General of the Disaster Management Center (DMC), Adeepa Thilakaratne, emphasized the need for vigilance. He stated that flood zones are not places for recreation, especially during such critical times. The department strongly advises the public to stay away from these areas.

“This is not the time for fun activities, people should be more cautious”, said Thilakratne.

Thilakaratne pointed out that DMC along with the police and navy involved in flood response efforts, primarily focuses on rescuing those affected by the floods. However, they often lack the resources to prevent individuals from putting themselves in harm's way. He urged parents to closely supervise their children and discourage them from risky behavior near flood sites. With officials already overwhelmed assisting flood victims, it's vital for everyone to understand the risks and act responsibly to safeguard their own lives, said he.

Increasing public awareness about the dangers of electricity during floods is essential. “People should be aware of the risks and appropriate actions to take during flooding events”.

He further noted that the flood water can come into contact with live electrical wires, appliances, and outlets, causing widespread electrocution hazards. Since water is an excellent conductor of electricity, anyone in the vicinity can be at risk of severe injury or death if they come into contact with electrically charged water.

The infrastructure of electrical systems, including power lines and transformers, can be damaged or short-circuited by floodwaters. This can result in unexpected electrical discharges and sparks, posing significant dangers to individuals nearby.

Electricity poses a severe threat during floods due to the risk of electrocution and damage to electrical infrastructure. In the country, where recent floods have been fatal, it is crucial to follow safety measures, turn off power when necessary, and avoid contact with electrical equipment in floodwaters. “Public support and awareness are key to mitigating these risks and protecting lives during such natural disasters.” Said he.

In the meantime, the Police has established a Special Operations Room to assist the public affected due to adverse weather. The hotline number is 011-2421820. Other numbers are 0112439212, 0112013036 and 0112013039.
