The Department of Examinations says invigilators have uncovered exam cheating attempts at three separate GCE Ordinary Level examination centres today.
All the incidents relate to candidates using mobile phones to obtain assistance to answer their Mathematics question papers.
At an examination centre in Bibile, an invigilator and the exam hall supervisor detected a candidate in the process of obtaining answers to her Mathematics paper via WhatsApp from a teacher.
Meanwhile, two candidates at an examination centre in Henegama were detected separately while in the process of obtaining assistance from teachers to answer their Mathematics papers after sharing the paper with the teachers on WhatsApp.
Five candidates at an examination centre in Seeduwa were also detected using social media to obtain answers to their Mathematics papers after sharing it with teachers.
Issuing a statement, Commissioner General of Examinations Amith Jayasundara said that stern legal action will be taken against all those involved in the above three incidents under the Public Examinations Act and the Criminal Procedure Code.
