An employee of a private cleaning firm was detained by officials of Customs Narcotics Control Division at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) when she attempted to remove a stock of jewelry and gold in gel form worth over five million.
The arrested has been identified as a 55-year-old resident of the Miridiyalanda area of Veyangoda.
The suspect admitted to Sri Lanka Customs that she received the package containing the gold stock from an unknown woman inside of a duty-free mall restroom at the BIA requesting her to hand over the package to a person outside the airport grounds with the promise of Rs. 60,000 payment.
A Spokesman of Sri Lanka Customs' Narcotics Control Unit said that 1.4 kg of gold jewelry and 1.35 kg of pure gold in gel form were among the gold items found in the looted stockpile.
Further investigations into the incident are currently by the Sri Lanka Customs authorities.
