The report of the committee which was appointed to review the allowances, perks and privileges provided to Members of Parliament, Ministers and former Presidents has been handed over to President Anura Kumara Dissanayke.
The report of the committee headed by former Supreme Court Justice K.T. Chitrasiri was handed over to the President at the Presidential Secretariat today (December 2), the President’s Media Division (PMD) announced a short while ago. The appointment of the committee was exclusively reported in the Sunday Times Business a few weeks back.
The committee has looked into scale back vehicle provisions, pensions, house allowances, and other financial perks that come with the election of the parliamentarians.
It has been mandated to review the existing package and come up with new legislation to be tabled in parliament shortly.
This is besides the increasing government spending that has reached a fever pitch with demands for more financial responsibility arising due to the economic crisis. (BS)
