Cabinet has granted approval to a proposal by the Prime Minister to appoint a three-member committee to review entitlements, allowances, and privileges granted to Members of Parliament, Ministers and Ex-Presidents.
The three-member committee will be headed by retired Supreme Court Justice K.T. Chithrasiri and will also comprise retired Ministry Secretary D. Dissanayake and retired District Secretary Jayantha C.T. Bulumulla.
The government has to bear a significant cost annually from the public tax to provide these entitlements, allowances, and privileges and the government has recognized the necessity of minimization of this huge expenditure at the present fiscal capacity, an official statement said.
The three-member committee will be tasked with submitting a detailed report within two months outlining suitable recommendations to reduce such expenditure and to suggest alternative methods.
