The Court of Appeal has fixed for hearing on December 16 an application seeking a writ order for the arrest of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (Western Province) Deshabandu Tennakoon after naming him as a suspect in the case where Galle Face protesters were attacked on May 9 by pro-government supporters.
The application has been field by Attorney at law Ramalingam Ranjan who backed the Aragalaya campaign.
The application was taken up by a bench comprising Sobitha Rajakaruna and Dhammiaka Ganepola.
Mithree Gunaratne, PC appearing for the petitioner said that the Police investigations to these incidents are nearly completed and that despite availability of evidence the police has not taken sufficient action against SDIG Tennakoon. He sought a short date for the case.
Attorney at Law Sudath Kaldera representing SDIG Tennakoon said that Romesh de Silva, PC was appearing in this case and that the relevant documents were received only yesterday and therefore to grant a suitable date.
Accordingly the Bench fixed the case for December 16 and objections could be field a week prior to that date.
The Attorney General, Inspector General of Police, Director CID and SDIG Tennakoon were the respondents in the case.
The petition also seeks and order to direct the IGP to take disciplinary action against SDIG Tennakoon.
