Police investigating the accident at the Kanatta junction on Monday, has informed courts today that driver of the crane had tested positive for using cannabis and a results of a further urine test is due whether he had use any other drugs.
The driver was remanded until August 7, after being produced at the Colombo Traffic Magistrate’s court.
The mother of the driver told journalists that that the driver had not used any narcotics, as reported in the media.
However, a senior Police officer said that they submitted a medical report to courts that the driver had used cannabis.
Meanwhile the owner of the crane also arrested on Monday was released on bail of Rs 500,000 surety bail.
One person was killed and eight others were injured in the accident, while three cars and seven motor cycles were damaged.
Initial investigations have revealed that the brakes of the crane did not function leading to accident, but eyewitnesses said that driver travelling from the direction of Rajagiriya was driving at an excessive speed.
