Veteran Sri Lankan Cartoonist Camillus Perera, creator of the iconic ‘Gajaman’, passed away today (17) at the age of 84.
Mr. Perera began his career as a Cartoonist in 1966, creating characters first for the Lakehouse’s Observer (later Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited). He later developed another character named “Dekkoth Pathmawathi” for their film magazine.
In 1972, he created his most popular character, ‘Gajaman’ which was released as the first ever Sri Lankan Sinhala 3D animation comedy film earlier this year.
“Camillusge Gajaman”, a magazine dedicated to Mr. Perera’s work, was published in April, 1984. The sequels “Camillusge Samayan” and “Camillusge Gajaman #2” were inspired by its popularity, with over 200,000 copies sold, both leading to the creation of “Camillus Publications” eventually.
Mr. Perera also contributed to multiple publications throughout the 1990s, one of which being a weekly comic magazine.
