The depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal was roughly 490 km northeast of Trincomalee, and is to see it grow into a deep depression in the next 12 hours, the Department of Meteorology said.
By tomorrow (3), it is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm.
It is predicted to track west-northwestward close to Sri Lanka's north coast and toward India's north Tamil Nadu coast by Tuesday (5).
Cloudy skies will loom over much of the island today.
Occasional showers or thundershowers are due in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, along with North-western Provinces and heavy rainfall over 100mm is possible at certain areas.
Besides, multiple places in the remaining provinces will see showers or thundershowers after 1:00 pm, a Duty Meteorologist of the Met. Department said.
Morning showers are most likely in the Southern Province.
High winds of 40-50 KMPH are expected in the Northern, Northcentral, Northwestern, and Southern Provinces, as well as in Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts.
The public is urged to take preventives to reduce harm that can be caused by heavy winds and lightning during thunderstorms.
