Cyclonic conditions to be experienced in Trinco today

The cyclonic conditions are set to be experienced around Trincomalee in the next few hours.

The Meteorology Department warned that the distance between the centers of the deep depression at the south west Bay of Bengal has now  reduced to 120 km off Trincomalee.  

 The deep depression is likely to move closer to the east coast of Sri Lanka and intensify further into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours, according to the warning issued at 11.30 a.m.

A duty weather forecaster explained that due to the system cloudy skies will prevaile over most parts of the island and very heavy showers and strong gusty winds are expected in Northern, North-central, Eastern, North-western and Central provinces.

 Meanwhile Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern, North-central, Central, western and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Kegalle districts.
 Very heavy showers above 150 mm are likely at some places.

Showers will occur at times elsewhere of the island too.

 Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm arelikely at some places. The metrology department also issued warnings for the fishing community as well as others who engaged in naval activities according to their predictions, the deep and shallow sea areas around the island will be rough to very rough as the windspeed can be increased up to (60-70) kmph at times.

 Very heavy showers orthundershowers are likely at some places areas around the island.

They also warned of swell waves (about 2.5–3.0 m) height may increase in the sea areas off the coast extending from Batticaloa to Kankasanthurai via Trincomalee.
There is a possibility that near shore sea areas off the coast extending from Batticaloa to Kankasanthurai via Trincomalee may experience surges due to swell waves.

They warned the Naval and fishing communities not to venture to the deep and shallow sea areas around the island until further notice.

According to the Disaster Management center situation report 207,582 persons of 59269 families were affected due to prevailing weather situation. 

Meanwhile Matale Districrt too was affected due to the prevailing adverse weather situation, as rains and gusty winds persisted in the districts around 13 houses in six divisional secretary areas have been destroyed.

According to the District Disaster Management Centers assistant Director Chaminda Amaraweera said that three houses were fully damaged while ten houses were partially damaged. He explained 45 persons of 13 families have been affected.
