An elephant popularly known as ‘Dalakota’ in the Yala National Park has died after attempts by wildlife officers to treat an leg injury failed.
The elephant was popular among local and foreign tourists.
The elephant, which was about eight and a half feet tall and aged between twenty-five and thirty-seven years old, was found by Wildlife officials with an injury on its right leg near a lake inside the park.
The elephant has been treated by wildlife officials for about one and a half months, but could not be saved
The cause of the injury or the reason for death has not yet been revealed so far.
On the advice of Wildlife Conservation Department Southern Provincial Assistant Director W.A.D.U Indrajith Mr. THDA De Silva, Wildlife Site Guard of Yala (vi) Forest Zone, is investigating the incident.
