The Dambulla Economic centre that was scheduled to be opened at 12 mid night on the 7th had to be opened by 10 pm yesterday due to large stocks of vegetables arriving at the centre ahead.
The government had taken a decision to open all economic centres in the island today (8) and tomorrow (9), and accordingly it was planned to open at 12 midnight yesterday (7).
By 7 pm yesterday lorries from various parts of the island were seen queued up along the main road to the Dambulla centre. In addition many vehicles that had come to purchase vegetable stocks also were seen parked on the roadside. Hence the Police together with the management of the Dambulla Economic Centre took a decision to open the centre two hours earlier than the scheduled time. Even then many lorries were seen still parked along the A-9 road waiting to centre the centre by this morning.
While there was a high percentage of traders wearing face masks, one-metre distancing was not practical .
The vegetable prices were at a medium range, traders said.
