Sri Lanka has reported nearly 6,000 dengue infections in January, according to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU).
As of last Monday , 5,829 dengue cases have been reported across the island.
The largest number was uncovered from the Western Province accounting for the majority of all cases across the country which is at 1,956 (33.6%), with 1,228 reported in the Colombo District alone.
Besides, the first 15 days of 2024 have recorded 177 dengue cases in Jaffna District.
Last year, 88,398 cases were disclosed across the country with 57 deaths, according to the NDCU.
Meanwhile, nationwide programmes to combat dengue are presently in effect under the directive of the President and Dengue response units of the Ministry of Health.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe established an operational unit on January 3, supervised by the Ministry of Health to combat dengue, aiming at outlining future measures and the set of a reporting system.
