The government has named Sonali Samarasinghe, wife of slain journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge for the post of Minister Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York.
Foreign Ministry sources confirmed the decision has been made to offer her the post. It is not clear if she has accepted the appointment.
Meanwhile, the government is in the process of finalising the list of appointees to head Sri Lanka’s Missions abroad as many stations have fallen vacant since last December.

Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament today that the suspect in the rape of a lady doctor at the Anuradhapura teaching hospital has been identified as an army deserter and he will be apprehended shortly.
