Two persons reportedly involved in the murder of a resident in Peradeniya following a dispute over a chocolate worth 10 cents has been remanded by the Magistrate when Peradeniya Police produced them in court.
This follows an incident where a dispute over chocolate with 10 cents led to the murder of a 67 year old man’s death.
Dharmasena Cooray a resident of Phasl Eriyagama who was mercilessly assaulted by a shop owner and his assistant over the ' lifting ' of a chocolate worth ten cents from a bottle in the shop succumbed to his injuries..
The Kandy Acting Magistrate Mahinda Liyanage ordered an open verdict on the death of the deceased following a Post Mortem by Kandy Judicial Medical Officer Dr.S.M.Semasinghe.
Dharmasena Cooray of Pahala Eriygama had the habit of taking his provisions from Peradeniya Bazaar and he had also developed a love for chocolates, when he would take one for himself and the other for his wife.
On a day when he had no money he had made use of his wits to ' take ' a Chocalate worth only ten cents on the sly from a shop at Peradeniya..
On the day he visited Peradeniya again, he was recognized through the CCTV camera footage as the man who had lifted the chocolate form the bottle.
Cooray was taken into the shop and to a room and assaulted mercilessly and even with iron bars. He was left in a state of stupor and in the evening thrown out of the shop..
Cooray had stayed outside the shop bleeding and lying down. On the following morning when he was lying on the road in front of the shop, a woman who had recognised the victim contacted the police and one of his sons.
Peradeniya police investigated into the incident headed by the Chief Inspector of Peradeniya Police Vijitha Wijekoon and statements were recorded at the hospital as he was able to speak. He had related the story and after which he had died
The shop owner and his assistant were taken into custody and produced before the Maigstrate who remanded them
