Dr. Asoka Sapumal Ranwala has been unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 10th Parliament of Sri Lanka. His name was proposed by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and seconded by Minister Vijitha Herath.
Dr. Ranwala began his political journey as a young member of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and is presently a prominent member of the National People’s Power (NPP). He was elected to Parliament in the 2024 general election, representing the Gampaha Electoral District.
A graduate of the University of Moratuwa with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Dr. Ranwala previously worked at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation’s Sapugaskanda Refinery. His political experience includes serving on the Biyagama Local Government body and being elected twice to the Western Provincial Council.
Dr. Ranwala also holds a PhD in Biochemistry from Waseda University, Japan. He serves as the Director of the BioGenic Green Technology Research Institute, which focuses on developing sustainable biogenic agricultural practices.
