The former leader of the New Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) and the New Left Front and well-known figure in left-wing politics in Sri Lanka, Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne, passed away at the age of 81.
Dr. Karunaratne, who was well-known for his unwavering dedication to socialist principles, was a prominent supporter of communist causes and had a major impact on Sri Lankan politics.
Born on March 8, 1943, in the Lunugala area, he began his educational journey at Ananda College in Matugama, where he received his primary education. He then continued his studies at Ananda Vidyalaya in Colombo, completing his secondary education there.
Following his secondary education, he attended the University of Ceylon, where he graduated with first-class honors in electrical engineering. His academic excellence earned him a Commonwealth scholarship, allowing him to pursue further studies at the University of Cambridge, where he completed his doctorate in 1970.
