Drought ruins 51,055 acres of paddy lands

The present extreme dry spell has taken a heavy toll on agriculture wreaking havoc on 51,055 acres as of August 22; the Ministry of Agriculture said today (August 23) based on the most recent report tabulated by the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board evaluating the crop failures.

In line with the report, the Ministry said 51,479 crop fields have been affected in total making 46,072 farmers wrapped in despair where 45,678 are supposedly paddy farmers.  

Moreover, the Ministry further said 24,647 acres of land in Kurunegala have undergone crop failure making it the greatest depth where the count of farmers that have been left scrambled has shot up to 29,472.

In the meantime, Udawalawe paddy cultivation area remains the second worst hit with over 14,067 acres destroyed by the aridity causing misery to 5,867 cultivators.
