The Election Commission issued an Extraordinary gazette today declaring the appointment of Ajith Mannapperuma to the vacant Parliament seat of Ranjan Ramanayake.
The gazette notification came after Secretary General of Parliament had informed the Chairman of Election Commission yesterday that, Ranjan Ramanayake ceased to be a Member of Parliament and accordingly there’s a vacant seat in Parliament with respect to the electoral district of Gampaha in terms of the Article 66 (d) of the Constitution.
This notice has been issued by the Secretary General of Parliament in terms of Section 64 (01) of the Parliamentary Elections Act No. 01 of 1981.
Earlier today pandemonium broke out in Parliament as Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MPs continued to protest against the Speaker's decision to announce that SJB MP Ranjan Ramanayake's seat had fallen vacant.
Mr Ramanayake, who was elected to Parliament from the Gampaha District, is currently serving a four-year prison sentence after being convicted of Contempt of Court.
SJB MPs wore black armbands to protest the Speaker's decision and held a protest in the Chamber holding placards in support of Mr Ramanayake.
However, Government MPs too held up counter signs denouncing the SJB and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
