Around 8,000 persons have shown their interest in serving in Independent Commissions, officials said.
The applications have been sent to Constitutional Council (CC) after it met for the first time on January 25 and decided to call for applications from interested and qualified individuals to serve as members of the Independent Commissions.
The Constitutional Council meeting was presided over by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
Officials said that the next step of shortlisting the applicants will now commence.
They said that the processing of the applications would take time as they would have to check whether they are suitable to serve in the Commissions.
The CC will scrutinise the applications to select the most suitable candidates and then submit its nominations to the President.
