The debate on the use of Emergency Regulations to control soaring food prices ended in Parliament a short while ago with the regulations being passed with a major of 81 votes.
One hundred and thirty two government members voted in favour of the regulations while 51 opposition members voted against.
Opposition members during the debate questioned the need to impose Emergency Regulations to control food prices, but the government members strongly defended the move saying the existing laws such as the Consumer Affairs Authority laws were not sufficient.
Opposition members pointed out that the regulations could be heavily misused to control trade union activities and that there were several regulations under which the government could have acted under.
