European HR Ambassadors demand immediate release or uphold the right to a fair trial for detained poet

News

Nine European Human Rights Ambassadors expressed grave concerns about the ongoing arbitrary detention of poet and teacher Ahnaf Jazeem, a statement from ambassadors said.

Mr Jazeem was arrested in May 2020 under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. After a year of arbitrary detention, Mr Jazeem has still not been charged.

"We join a number of human rights organizations in calling for either the immediate release of Mr Jezeem or for prompt charges in full accordance with human rights international standards including the right to a fair trial.

The Ambassadors called on the government to review the PTA without further delay and to ensure that any legislation on combating terrorism complies fully with the State’s international human rights and humanitarian obligations.
